Hawaiian Bread for the Win: Ham and Cheese Sliders
It does not get any better than layers of sweet honey ham and melty white cheddar cheese nestled between soft Hawaiian bread that gets brushed with a buttery, dijon, sweet poppyseed glaze and baked to perfection. These mini sliders will give you all of the comfort food feels, plus they are mini and you can never say no to anything that is mini!
“You know I want you, it’s not a secret I try to hide”... I am pretty sure Zac Efron was singing about these ham and cheese sliders, don’t you agree? I want one and could definitely use one of these right now. These little guys contain so much flavor within such a small bun. They hold the perfect amount of savory and sweet. When I think of these, four important qualities one would look for in a recipe come to mind: easy, fast, make ahead and a crowd FAVORITE. Serve them at your next game day gathering, dinner or celebration with your loved ones.
The one thing that makes constructing these so easy and fast is that you are able to create these all together on one big sheet of bread as opposed to constructing individual mini sandwiches. There is no need to pull the bread apart ahead of time, you simply slice the whole loaf in half as one, then layer the meats and cheese on the bottom, place the top half on top and brush it with the glaze.
Let’s chat bread real quick. Hawaiian bread is what makes the slider. They are soft with hints of sweetness. You will not find this flavor in other slider breads. In my opinion, they also have a better texture and consistency. One thing I will note, is that I did make these twice and a bit different each time. I tried two different brands of hawaiian rolls: Trader Joe’s and the traditional King‘s Hawaiian. The King’s Hawaiian is the most common one people typically go with. But, they were too soft and didn’t hold as well. I never thought there could be such things as too soft of bread, but the Trader Joe’s brand held the sandwiches much better from start to finish.
When cutting King’s Hawaiian rolls they were so soft I found myself accidentally crushing the bread during the process and then after they were baked they still had the same issue. So, I recommend going with Trader Joe’s Hawaiian rolls. This sandwich is typically made with swiss cheese, however I opted to use white cheddar because it provides that extra punch of flavor. You can also easily make these ahead of time and place them in the fridge until you are ready to bake them.

I got 2 packs and it made 24 mini sliders, INGREDIENTS:
1.5 pounds honey ham from the deli (sandwich style ham)
.75 pounds white cheddar cheese slices from the deli
2 Packs Hawaiian sliders bread (each of my packs came with 12 sliders I used the Trader Joe’s brand, highly recommend)
1 Cup butter, melted
1 TBSP poppy seeds
1 TBSP minced dried onion
1/2 TBSP dried parsley flakes
Few pinches of salt
1 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
1 TSP Dijon mustard
1/2 TBSP honey
Slice each pack of Hawaiian bread in half to separate the top half and the bottom half.
Place the bottom half of each loaf in a baking dish.
Fold your ham slices in half, then half again so they are folded into quarters. Begin layering the ham on the bottom half of the loaf. Do one layer of ham to start.
Then, top with a layer of cheese. Then, another layer of ham on top. (I like extra ham so when layering...do as much or as little as you’d like). Place the top half of the loaf on top.
In a microwave safe bowl, melt your butter. Add the remaining ingredients: poppy seeds, minced onion, parsley flakes, worcestershire sauce, dijon mustard, honey and salt. Whisk together.
Using a basing brush, brush the top of the sandwiches with your glaze. Make sure to cover all areas. Brush the top and all sides to soak everywhere.
Preheat you oven to 350 degrees. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or Until cheese is melted and buns are golden brown. Serve immediately and enjoy!
