Parmesan Poppy Seed Wrapped Apple Gouda Chicken Sausage Bites

If you are one who seeks out pigs and a blanket whenever you attend a get together or you are that individual that always brings them, then you will love this recipe! Flaky pastry puff stuffed with little chicken apple gouda sausages, then topped with a parmesan cheese, poppy seed mixture that gets pressed into the dough and garnished with a fresh jalapeno slice. Bake them to golden perfection and they become little poppers that make for the perfect appetizer and definitely ups your appetizer ante.

Let’s talk about the chicken sausage. So, this recipe is great because it can be such a versatile recipe. I used amylu’s brand and they have a variety of types and flavors of chicken sausage. I choose apple and gouda because it pairs well with the other flavors of parmesan cheese, jalapeno and poppy seeds. But, feel free to improvise if there are any other flavors you might gravitate towards. Another great thing about them is that the sausages can be cooked ahead of time and kept in the fridge until ready to cut, wrap and bake. One last thing about the sausages, is when cutting them, I cut them in 4ths. But, if you want them to be a tad bit smaller, feel free to cut them into 5ths or 6ths.

I know that some people are super saucy people and others are plain janes, So, I brag about how flavorful these are and I love enjoying them on their own. But, it won’t hurt to dip them in bbq sauce, ketchup or your sauce of choice. You can’t go wrong either way!

A slightly elevated and a slightly sophisticated take on our childhood favorite, that everyone will love…this is one you do not want to miss!

Ingredients
  • 1 Package pastry puff, thawed if it’s not already
  • 1 Package Amylu apple gouda chicken sausages, cooked
  • 1-2 TBSP poppy seeds
  • 1-2 TBSP grated parmesan cheese
  • Fresh jalapeno, sliced
  • 1 Egg, whisked for egg wash
Instructions
  1. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and non-stick spray. Set aside.
  2. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.
  3. Remove chicken sausage from the package, cook over medium heat until golden brown on each side and no longer pink.
  4. While chicken sausage is cooking, make poppy seed parmesan mixture by combining both ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Set aside.
  5. Slice jalapeno, set aside.
  6. Crack your egg in a bowl and whisk together.
  7. Remove the pastry puff from the package and lay flat. Using a pizza cutter, cut into strips. Then, cut each strip in half.
  8. Cut your cooked chicken sausage in 4ths.
  9. Take one piece of cut chicken sausage and roll it into one piece of cut pastry puff.
  10. Using a basting brush, brush the tops and sides with the egg wash.
  11. Take a pinch or two of your parmesan and poppy seed mixture and press it into the top of the egg washed pastry puff. Garnish with a jalapeno slice and press ontop as well. Repeat this until you have your desired amount of sausage pieces.
  12. Bake at 425 for 20 minutes or until the pastry is golden and cooked all the way through.
  13. Remove from the oven when done and serve immediately.
  14. ENJOY!

Can I do this in a slow cooker instead of the oven?
